Introduction
Contrary to popular belief, the SAT isn't primarily a test of intelligence. Instead, it tests a set of specific, learnable skills such as analyzing short passages, revising sentences for grammar and clarity, and solving math problems.
Studying for the SAT effectively means understanding the test inside and out. You need to identify what you actually don't know, study that material in the format the test uses, and rehearse under real timing before test day.
This guide walks through the current Digital SAT format, how to plan a study timeline for any amount of prep time, and how to approach each section, with sample questions modeled on the real thing.
What Is the Digital SAT's Format?
The Digital SAT is a two-hour, 14-minute adaptive test taken entirely through the College Board's Bluebook app: a 64-minute Reading and Writing section (54 questions) and a 70-minute Math section (44 questions), each split into two modules where your Module 1 performance determines the difficulty, and score ceiling, of Module 2.
Since March 2024, the SAT has been administered entirely digitally, through the College Board's Bluebook application. If your older sibling, a parent, or an internet search result describes a paper test with five answer choices, a 25-minute essay, or a guessing penalty, that information describes a version of the SAT that no longer exists. The current test is shorter, adaptive, and structured differently enough that studying from outdated materials can waste real time.

The test is adaptive at the module level, not the question level. Everyone taking a given form sees the same first module in each section, with a mix of easier and harder questions. How you perform on that first module determines whether your second module is drawn from a harder pool (with a higher score ceiling) or an easier one (with a lower ceiling). This means the first module in each section carries disproportionate weight: a careless error in Module 1 can route you into a lower-ceiling Module 2, even if you would have handled harder material well. This means you want to be especially careful in the first modules to set yourself up for the highest possible score.
There's no penalty for guessing. Every question, answered or not, is scored the same way if wrong: zero. This means you should never leave a question blank. If you're out of time, fill something in.
Reading and Writing passages are short. Rather than the old format of one long passage with ten or more attached questions, the current test presents 25- to 150-word passages (or passage pairs), each followed by exactly one question. This changes the skill being tested: less endurance-based skimming, more precise, close reading of small amounts of text under time pressure.
A graphing calculator (Desmos) is built into the testing app for the entire Math section. You're allowed to bring your own approved calculator as well, but you don't need to; the built-in tool is available on every question, not just a "calculator-allowed" portion.
Scoring runs 200–800 per section, for a composite of 400–1600. Because the SAT is adaptive, the same number of correct answers can produce different scaled scores depending on which module difficulty you were routed into. This is intentional and is how the test measures ability more precisely with fewer questions than the old paper format required.
Step One: What Do You Need to Study for the SAT?
Take one full-length, official Bluebook practice test under real timing before studying anything else, then sort every missed question into one of four categories: content gap, timing, misreading, or carelessness, to know exactly where to focus.

The College Board's Bluebook app includes several free, full-length adaptive practice tests that mirror the actual test-day experience. This is the most accurate diagnostic available and far more useful than a generic online quiz, because it uses the same interface, timing, and adaptive logic as the real exam.
Two things matter about this first test:
Take it cold, and take it seriously. Don't study beforehand, and don't take breaks the real test doesn't give you. That will get you the most accurate baseline score so you know what to study and where you can improve.
Review every question you got wrong. Go through every missed question and sort your errors into categories: Did you not know the content? Did you know it but run out of time? Did you misread the question? Did you know it but pick the wrong answer due to carelessness? These are four different problems with four different fixes. A simple spreadsheet or notebook tracking each missed question by section, content domain, and reason for the miss becomes the backbone of an efficient study plan because it tells you exactly where your remaining hours will be the most effective.
Step Two: How Do You Build an SAT Study Plan?
Your study plan should match your timeline: 3+ months allows for cycles of content review, skill drilling, and full practice tests; 4-6 weeks compresses that into targeted work on your weakest domains; under 2 weeks means prioritizing pacing and guessing strategy over new content.
How you study should depend heavily on how much time you have before test day. There is no single correct plan. It's possible to make significant score gains in just a few weeks, but we recommend at least 6 weeks of dedicated SAT prep in order to not burn yourself out while still targeting all your weak areas.
If You Have Three Months or More
This is enough time to significantly raise your score. The plan should be built around cycles rather than a single linear push.
Weeks 1–2: Diagnostic test, error analysis, and content review of foundational gaps, such as grammar rules you don't know cold, algebra procedures that are rusty, vocabulary-in-context strategy, etc.
Weeks 3–8: Alternate between targeted skill practice (drilling one content domain at a time) and timed section-length practice to build stamina and pacing. Take one full practice test every two to three weeks, always under real timing, always followed by a full error review.
Weeks 9–11: Focus on full, timed practice tests, one per week if possible, with progressively less new content and more refinement of pacing, careless-error habits, and specific weak question types.
Final week: Light review, no new content, one final practice test taken about a week out (not the night before), then rest.
If You Have Four to Six Weeks
Compress the cycle above: one diagnostic, two to three weeks of targeted skill work driven entirely by the error log (skip content you've already mastered), then two weeks of full-length, timed practice tests with detailed review after each one. With this timeline, prioritization matters more than breadth. Study your two or three weakest content domains deeply rather than reviewing everything lightly.
If You Have Two Weeks or Less
In this situation, your goal is to make the most improvements in a fixed amount of time, while remaining realistic about what's possible.
If this isn't your last opportunity to take the SAT, and you've put in fewer than about 15–20 hours of prep so far, it's often worth registering for a later date instead and using the extra months properly; a rushed score frequently isn't representative of what a student can actually do. If postponing isn't an option , focus your remaining hours on the two moves that produce the most points per hour spent:
One full, timed practice test, reviewed thoroughly. Even with just a handful of hours available, sitting through realistic timing and then understanding exactly why each wrong question was missed, does more to raise your score than scattered review of random topics.
Pacing and guessing strategy, not new content. With no penalty for guessing, never leave a question blank, and don't spend more than 60–90 seconds on any single question in a section where you're unsure. Instead, flag it, guess your best answer, and move on; you can return if time allows. Spending three minutes stuck on one hard question while two easier ones go unanswered will lose you more points and give you a lower score.
In the final 24 hours, resist the urge to cram new material. Light review of formulas or grammar rules is fine; working through unfamiliar content the night before a four-hour test tends to increase anxiety more than it'll increase your score.
How Do You Study for SAT Reading and Writing?
SAT Reading and Writing splits into four domains:Craft and Structure (~28%), Information and Ideas (~26%), Standard English Conventions (~26%), and Expression of Ideas (~20%). Because grammar rules are a finite, learnable set, focusing on Standard English Conventions often results in the fastest score gains.
SAT Reading and Writing questions fall into four content domains. Knowing the split helps you allocate study time proportionally rather than evenly:
Craft and Structure (~28%, roughly 13–15 questions): vocabulary in context, understanding why an author structured a passage a certain way, and drawing connections between paired passages.
Information and Ideas (~26%, roughly 12–14 questions): central ideas, supporting details, and using textual or quantitative evidence (including reading a small graph or table) to support a claim.
Standard English Conventions (~26%, roughly 11–15 questions): grammar and punctuation — sentence boundaries, subject-verb agreement, modifier placement, and correct use of commas, semicolons, colons, and dashes.
Expression of Ideas (~20%, roughly 8–12 questions): revising for clarity and logical organization, choosing effective transitions, and combining information from bulleted notes to meet a stated goal.
Because Craft and Structure and Standard English Conventions together make up over half the section, and because grammar rules are a finite, learnable set (unlike open-ended reading comprehension, which improves more slowly), many students see the fastest point gains by starting with Standard English Conventions.
How to Study Each SAT Reading and Writing Question Type
Each Reading and Writing domain calls for a different study method: infer vocabulary from context, restate a passage's main point before checking answers, learn actual grammar rules instead of relying on what "sounds right," and identify the logical relationship between ideas before picking a transition.
For vocabulary in context and other Craft and Structure questions, the most efficient study method is practicing using surrounding sentence clues to define a word you may not know because that's exactly what the test asks you to do. Reading genuinely challenging material regularly (long-form journalism, classic literature, science writing) builds this skill as a byproduct, because it repeatedly puts you in the position of inferring meaning from context.
For Information and Ideas, practice restating a passage's main point in your own words before looking at the answer choices. This prevents the common trap of picking an answer that's true in general but not actually supported by the specific passage. For evidence questions involving a small chart or graph, the skill being tested is careful reading of the visual, not outside statistical knowledge.
For Standard English Conventions, the best approach is to learn the actual rules being tested, such as comma usage with nonessential clauses, semicolons joining independent clauses, subject-verb agreement across intervening phrases, etc. This is better than relying on "what sounds right," since many of these questions are specifically designed to sound almost correct either way.
For Expression of Ideas, work on identifying the logical relationship between two ideas first (contrast, cause-and-effect, addition, sequence). Then pick the word that expresses that relationship, rather than testing several transition words against the sentence and seeing which "sounds best."

Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
A. "Which was built in 1932 and still in occasional use" is nonessential: it adds extra information about the telescope but isn't needed to identify which telescope is meant (it's already specified as "the observatory's oldest"). Nonessential clauses introduced by "which" need a comma before them, and none after "was" is required since the clause is followed directly by the main verb ("draws"). Choice B is missing the required comma; C incorrectly shifts to present tense; D uses "that," which doesn't take a comma and signals an essential clause instead.
A researcher claims that urban tree cover significantly reduces summer surface temperatures in residential neighborhoods.
Which choice best supports the researcher's claim?
B. The claim is specifically about tree cover and temperature. Only B directly connects the two variables shown in the table in a way that supports the stated claim; the other choices are either irrelevant to the claim or describe the data collection method rather than the pattern in the results.
How Do You Study for SAT Math?
SAT Math splits into four domains: Algebra (~35%), Advanced Math (~35%), Problem-Solving and Data Analysis (~15%), and Geometry and Trigonometry (~15%). Algebra and Advanced Math, which together make up about 70% of the section, are usually the highest-value place to focus study time.

Algebra (~35%, roughly 13–15 questions): linear equations, inequalities, and systems of equations.

Most questions are standard multiple choice, but roughly a quarter are student-produced response questions, where you type in a numerical answer rather than selecting from choices. For these questions, there's no way to eliminate wrong answers or guess from a set of options.
How to Study SAT Math Questions
To get a high SAT Math score, you'll need to both know the content being tested and solve problems quickly and accurately to finish each section before time runs out. If you're struggling to raise your Math score, make sure you understand if you're missing questions because you don't know how to solve them or because you don't have time to solve them.
For content gaps, drill the specific procedure repeatedly with problems of increasing difficulty until it's automatic. For pacing or careless mistakes, practice taking timed Math sections until you get a good sense of how long you can spend on each question without running out of time at the end.
Since the Desmos calculator is available on every question, it's worth practicing with it well before test day, such as for graphing functions to check algebraic work, testing answer choices by substitution, and solving systems of equations visually.

Space full-length practice tests out rather than clustering them. If possible, give yourself at least a week between tests to see if your studying is making the impact you want.
How Should You Prepare the Final Days Before Your SAT?
In the final days before your SAT, focus on locking in the new skills you learned rather than trying to cram in new information. Prioritize sleep over last-minute review. Being well-rested will help you more on test day than a few more scattered grammar rules you memorized the night before.
Make sure your testing device (if you're bringing one) and Bluebook app are set up and tested well before test day, not the morning of. Device or login problems on test morning create stress that can hurt your concentration and performance. Know your testing location, plan to arrive with plenty of time before the test is scheduled to begin, eat a healthy breakfast, and pack a snack for the break. Expect to spend at least three hours in the testing center from start to finish.
