Our Methodology

TestPrepData produces guidance grounded in primary sources. Every article begins with official documentation from the College Board and ACT, including published test specifications, released practice materials, scoring data, and official policy on registration, retakes, and score reporting. We do not rely on secondhand summaries or outdated information that has not been verified against the current Digital SAT and Enhanced ACT formats.

We supplement official materials with the perspective of experienced tutors and test preparation professionals who work with students directly. Their input informs how we frame study timelines, prioritize content areas, and address the practical questions students and parents face.

Quick Answer

TL;DR / Quick Takeaway: Three of the best SAT prep courses work in very different ways: PrepScholar (adaptive and self-paced), Khan Academy (free and official), and Prep Expert's 6-Week Flagship (live and condensed). Choose PrepScholar for a personalized plan, Khan Academy for a $0 budget, and Prep Expert if your teen needs a live teacher and fixed deadlines.

Plenty of "best SAT prep" lists rank ten look-alike video libraries. We picked three courses that work differently on purpose, so you can match the format to your teen instead of chasing a generic winner. If you are still deciding how to study at all, start with our guide on how to study for the SAT.

The test itself is a reason to be picky. The digital SAT has 98 questions and 134 minutes of testing time, and the second module in each section adapts to how you did on the first. In our view, a course that practices the way the test works has an advantage, and that is the lens we used here.

What Should Any SAT Prep Course Cover?

Whatever you pick, the course should match the structure of the test. The Reading and Writing section has 54 questions in 64 minutes, about 71 seconds per question. The Math section has 44 questions in 70 minutes, about 95 seconds per question. Algebra and Advanced Math together make up about 70% of scored Math questions, so a course that spends its hours there is aiming at the right target. Bluebook also gives students a built-in Desmos calculator for the entire Math section, which is one more reason to practice on the real interface. That is why we looked closely at how each course handles practice tests.

Which of These SAT Prep Courses Do We Rank First?

Our verdict: PrepScholar takes the top spot. It builds a tailored weekly plan from a diagnostic test, it costs $397 against $1,196 for a live class, and its guarantee covers students who start at 1370 or higher, up to a final score of 1530. Khan Academy is the best free choice, and Prep Expert is the best fit for students who learn from a teacher on a set schedule.

How Did We Compare These SAT Prep Courses?

We checked each provider's official pages and terms, then compared them on the same five criteria:

  • Personalization: does the plan change based on what the student gets wrong?
  • Instruction: self-paced lessons, a live teacher, or both?
  • Practice: how many questions, and how close to the real digital test?
  • Total cost: the price plus what you still have to add.
  • Guarantee fine print: who qualifies, and what you have to do.
  • We did not run score trials of our own, so we make no claims about point gains. Every fact below comes from a provider's published information or from College Board.

Is PrepScholar the Best Online SAT Prep for a Personalized Plan?

PrepScholar is a self-paced online program that starts with a smart diagnostic test (60 questions, about 1.5 hours) and turns the results into a personalized weekly study plan. From there, students work through 45 skills across English and Math. Each skill has two difficulty levels, a written lesson, and video lessons.

The program is built to feel like the Bluebook testing app. It includes 4,700+ practice questions with explanations, about 150 hours of content, and 8 College Board practice tests with detailed score reports. Students also get a quiz generator and an incorrect-answers menu, and a progress page shows mastery for each of the 45 skills. Parents receive automated progress emails, and the study plan can send SMS reminders.

The base program costs $397 for 12 months of access, with a 5-day risk-free trial. PrepScholar's Trustpilot profile shows about 4.7 out of 5. Families who want a person involved can upgrade: live classes cost $895 (six 90-minute sessions, up to 9 students per class), and 1-on-1 tutoring starts at $995 for 4 hours. Both include the $397 online program.

Where it falls short: the base program has no live teacher, so a student who struggles to start alone may stall. The guarantee also requires finishing every assigned lesson and practice test, and a refund claim requires College Board to mail the official score report to PrepScholar, because digital submissions are not accepted. The AI Learning Assistant is a separate upgrade, $98 more at $495.

Best for: self-directed students with at least 8 weeks who want a plan built from their own diagnostic results.

Is Khan Academy SAT Prep Good Enough on Its Own?

Khan Academy is College Board's official partner for free practice, and it costs nothing. Its Digital SAT prep is two courses, Digital SAT Math and Digital SAT Reading and Writing. Both are Mastery-enabled, and the Course Challenge gauges where a student stands on each skill. College Board describes the offering as thousands of practice questions, videos, lessons, and hints.

Full-length tests live somewhere else. Khan Academy no longer offers them, so students take scored practice tests free in Bluebook, then use a custom link from Bluebook to review answers and rationales on Khan Academy. Khan Academy also no longer supports linking College Board accounts or importing earlier SAT scores.

Where it falls short: you build the plan yourself and juggle two platforms. There is no live teacher, and we found no score guarantee. Free also means nobody has paid for a deadline, which makes consistency the whole game.

Best for: families with a $0 budget and self-starters who will schedule their own Bluebook tests.

    Is Prep Expert's 6-Week Flagship Worth $1,196?

Prep Expert's 6-Week Flagship is a live online class. Students attend 12 classes of 3 hours each, two per week, taught by instructors who scored in the 99th percentile. The curriculum centers on more than 100 test-taking strategies developed by founder Dr. Shaan Patel, a perfect scorer. Students also take one full-length practice exam at home each week (six total), finish short homework assignments, and can use free weekly office hours. Missed classes are recorded, and schedule changes are free before the course starts.

The price on the schedule we checked was $1,196, or four payments of $299. Its own course page shows a 4.69 rating from 5,100+ verified reviews.

Where it falls short: the class is fixed, with 36 live hours packed into 6 weeks plus a 3-hour weekly exam and homework. The course page lists 1000+ practice questions, against PrepScholar's 4,700+. Access ends 60 days after the last class, while PrepScholar's base program lasts 12 months. The price is about three times PrepScholar's $397 online program.

Best for: students who learn best from a teacher, need deadlines, and can commit to six weeks of fixed class times.

How Do the Score Guarantees Really Compare?

Both paid courses advertise a guarantee, and both come with conditions. Here is the fine print side by side.

    Fine printPrepScholarPrep Expert 6-Week Flagship
Promise160+ point gain if you start under 1370; final score of at least 1530 if you start at 1370+200-point gain if you start at 1250 or lower; improvement up to 1450 if you start at 1260+; none at 1450+
Work requiredEvery assigned lesson and practice test80% of classes (10 of 12) for at least 80% of each class, 90% of homework on time, 100% of practice tests on time
Test windowOfficial SAT within 60 days of finishingOfficial SAT within 60 days after the last class
Claim deadlineRefund request within 360 days of purchaseOfficial before and after score reports submitted after the course

The starting score changes the picture. A student who starts at 1200 would need to reach 1360 under PrepScholar's terms (+160) and 1400 under Prep Expert's (+200). A student who starts at 1400 is promised a final score of at least 1530 under PrepScholar's terms, while Prep Expert's guarantee tops out at 1450. A guarantee's cap also reflects how confident a company is in its materials and its ability to boost your score, and PrepScholar's cap sits 80 points above Prep Expert's.

Both require an official SAT within 60 days of finishing, so time your course against a real test date. If you need a retest, our guide to how many times you can take the SAT covers the trade-offs.

How Much Time and Money Does Each Course Take?

These are our planning figures, not provider promises. We divide each price by the hours the provider states.

    CoursePriceHoursCost per hourWeekly load
PrepScholar$39740 recommended study hoursAbout $105 hours a week over 8 weeks
    Khan Academy$0You decide$0You decide
Prep Expert$1,19672 course hours$1712 hours a week over 6 weeks

Prep Expert's weekly load is 72 hours divided by 6 weeks. PrepScholar's 40-hour figure is its recommended minimum, and the program holds about 150 hours of content, so a student aiming high can use more. Build a calendar with our SAT study plan guide before you pay for anything.

    If you have 6 months...

PrepScholar's 40 recommended hours come to about 1.5 hours a week over 26 weeks, which leaves room to take a first official SAT, review the results, and retest. A student with this much runway has options beyond a condensed class.

    If you have 6 weeks...

Prep Expert's schedule is built for this window, at 12 hours a week. PrepScholar's 40 hours over 6 weeks is about 6.7 hours a week, which is workable for a motivated student who starts the diagnostic on day one.

The Bottom Line on the Best SAT Prep Courses

If you want one pick, choose PrepScholar: a diagnostic-built plan, $397 for 12 months, and a guarantee that reaches students starting at 1370 or higher. If cost is the barrier, start with Khan Academy and Bluebook today, since both are free. If your teen needs a teacher and deadlines, Prep Expert's 6-Week Flagship fits, as long as your family can handle 12 hours a week for 6 weeks. Whichever of the best SAT prep courses you choose, book an official SAT date first and work backward.
